This is a rugged dwarf version with a compact, dome-shaped habit that is ideal for containers or spaces short on space. The lacy, lightly cupped leaves emerge bright green in spring and turn red-purple color in fall and winter. Color is more intense in full sun. While known as heavenly bamboo, thanks to its bright green stems, foliage texture and branching habit, nandina is not a true bamboo. Like other nandinas, 'Atropurpurea Nana' exhibits good resistance to disease, pest and deer. Thrives in nutrient-poor soils as long as it's given at least adequate drainage. Use for screening, informal hedge, borders or mass plantings. Treat as an accent with other shrubs and perennials. Grows to 2 ft. to 3 ft. H and wide. Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Provide full to part sun. Hardy to Zone 6/minus 5°F.
