Ilex vomitoria, commonly called the Yaupon Holly, is one of two plants native to North American that contains caffeine, the other being Ilex cassine, or Dahoon Holly. Native American tribes across the Southeast used Yaupon ceremonially, with reports they fasted, and then consumed huge quantities of black drink prepared from the roasted leaves and stems of Yaupon, which often resulting in vomiting. Unfortunately, this is the source of the scientific name "vomitoria," however, studies have shown the plant itself has no emetic properties. There are some farms beginning to grow Yaupon commercially, claiming it is a better tasting alternative to the South American Yerba Mate, to which it is closely related. Yaupon tea has been consumed in the South as a coffee and tea substitute, but fell out of favor due to its being associated with "backwoods" people. Plants are either male or female, with both sexes necessary to produce berries, like other hollies. It is my understanding that the berries, however, are poisonous and should not be consumed. *International buyers please note: No refunds for items lost in shipping, or confiscated/destroyed by customs. Please check local laws before ordering to ensure that it is legal to import these seeds into your country or region. I am unable to obtain phytosanitary certificates, so please check your country or region's laws to be sure one is not required. Legal Stuff: I do my best to provide the best seeds and service I can, but I'm human. I make mistakes. I try to be accurate in my auctions, so if you see errors in my listings, please contact me! No refunds. Please contact me upon arrival if your seeds have been damaged, and I will work with you to make things right. Also, please allow some time for your seeds to arrive, and contact me before leaving feedback if they don't! No guarantees as to germination - once the seeds are in your hands, they're out of my control!
