India's main opposition Congress party said on Friday that Rahul Gandhi, the face of the party and its former president, will contest general elections from the family bastion seat of Raebareli in north India as well.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest from Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli, a seat represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi for four terms until she was elected to Rajya Sabha this year. The party’s decision came on the last day for nomination filing by candidates for the prestigious seat.

The Congress is yet to announce its candidate on Raebareli, which is a party stronghold, and Amethi, which was represented by Rahul Gandhi for 15 years before he lost to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019.

Jairam Ramesh revealed that the Congress party is expected to unveil the names of the candidates for the Raebareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats by this evening.
