NASA is building a moonquake detector for its upcoming Artemis 3 mission, in hopes of learning more about lunar tremors and the internal structure of the moon.

When astronauts return to the moon later this decade, they’ll bring along science experiments to study moonquakes, lunar water ice and extraterrestrial agriculture

NASA said this week its Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland is building a moonquake detector for astronauts to deploy when they land on the Moon during the Artemis 3 mission.

NASA announced this week that it’s chosen Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost and Venturi Astrolab to develop their lunar terrain vehicles (LTV) in a feasibility study over the next year. One will eventually be chosen for a demonstration mission.

Japan will become the first nation after the United States to land an astronaut on the moon as part of the Artemis lunar exploration campaign.

Moonquakes were first detected on the Moon's near side during the Apollo era, but there's little information on the tremors taking place at the south pole.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will build a moonquake detector for astronauts to deploy on the moon in 2026 during the Artemis III mission, which will return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years.
