Federal officials have opened an investigation into Waymo after receiving reports of crashes or traffic violations.

Crashing into parked cars, drifting over into oncoming traffic, intruding into construction zones—all this "unexpected behavior" from Waymo's self-driving vehicles may be violating traffic laws, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Monday.

The U.S. government’s highway safety agency has opened another investigation of automated driving systems, this time into crashes involving Waymo’s self-driving vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating two autonomous driving companies following incidents in which the vehicles behaved erratically and sometimes disobeyed traffic safety rules or were involved in crashes.

Federal regulators are investigating yet another autonomous-vehicle company that operates in San Francisco. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Monday it is looking into Waymo’s fleet of 444 self-driving vehicles and the robotaxis’ automated driving systems after receiving 17 reports of single-vehicle crashes and five reports of possible traffic safety law violations.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted documents detailing the investigating after getting 22 reports of Waymo vehicles either crashing or doing something that may have violated traffic laws.
