The United States expressed deep concern to Israel's government over an airstrike in Rafah and urged an investigation as soon as it saw reports of the incident, the State Department said on Tuesday, adding that Washington will closely watch the results of Israel's probe.

At least 21 people were killed in a tent encampment near Rafah’s coast Tuesday on Tuesday by what a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense said was likely Israeli artillery fire. The strikes, which also injured at least 64 people,

The Biden administration told Israel to take every precaution to protect civilians after a military strike in Rafah killed dozens of Palestinians, as it faced calls from some fellow Democrats to halt military shipments to Israel.

Yet the gory death toll last weekend is nothing compared to what Israel will face in Gaza over the long-term. The territory is for all intents and purposes flattened. The World Bank and the United Nations estimate that damage to Gaza's critical infrastructure is around $18.

At least 45 people were killed in the attack, the Gaza Health Ministry said. Benjamin Netanyahu called it a “tragic accident” and promised an investigation.
